Balancing Beliefs

Working with Belief systems is a large part of my work. Why Beliefs? Beliefs are something that drives each and every one of us. We see the results of our beliefs in what we say and do, and it is what makes us all different. So where do our Beliefs come from? Early on, many come from our parents, guardians and family, then from our interactions at school and with our friends and, of course, our life experiences. These beliefs sit in the background in our subconscious mind and guide us 'day in and day out' without much need to question them. It is only when our life isn't going in a way that we want it to that we might need to spend some time checking to see if they are still relevant for us now, are they balanced?

So lets look at Road Rage as an example... the belief might be 'other drivers are idiots!' and armed with that belief we might shout, swear and gesticulate to other drives to let them know how we feel. So how balanced is that belief? Are all other drivers idiots? probably not. So a more balanced belief might be 'Most drivers are doing their best and we all make mistakes'... so armed with this belief you can see that we might behave in a milder manner and be less frustrated by other drivers. The funny thing about beliefs is that we nearly always, sub-consciously, look for the evidence that supports that belief rather than the exceptions.

So that was a straightforward example, but its not always that simple. There are thousands of beliefs that drive our behaviour and many of them could lack balance, so its only when working with someone else that you might get to figure out which ones could be re-balanced to give you the changes you might want in your life.
